Application in water-based coatings
Coating wetting agents are classified by substrate target into two types: substrate wetting agents and wetting & dispersing agents.
① Substrate Wetting Agents
Used to improve the surface tension and permeability of coatings, enabling better wetting of the substrate and thereby enhancing coating adhesion—widely used especially for improving primer-to-substrate adhesion. The ability to reduce surface tension depends on the chemical structure.
② Wetting & Dispersing Agents
Key features: improve coating smoothness, mar resistance, and anti-blocking properties. A drawback of this type of leveling agent is its tendency to stabilize foam and affect intercoat adhesion

The two main functions of coating wetting agents

Substrate Wetting Function
Reduces surface tension and maintains liquid/solid interfacial forces — this relates to static surface tension.
Delivers excellent substrate wetting and anti-cratering without compromising adhesion. The other aspect is dynamic surface tension: in applications such as paper and cardboard, it provides fast foam suppression while offering very good wetting of substrates and pigments.

❷ Anti-Cratering Function
Wetting agents are highly effective against craters, pinholes, volcanic craters, and fish eyes. While providing substrate wetting and anti-cratering, they additionally promote flow and offer excellent recoatability

Requirements for Wetting Agents Used in Paint Formulations

The dynamic wetting and permeability of substrate wetting agents play a key role during film drying. Excellent dynamic wetting and penetration allow faster soak-in to the substrate surface for better results, while also reducing the required dosage.
Good compatibility helps avoid defects such as oil retreat (cratering/shrinking) and color flooding/blushing during application, broadens formulation tolerance, and does not affect recoatability.
(Tech) Additives’ high-performance silicone wetting agent Tech-2409 is designed for rapid wetting of hard-to-wet substrates. It features strong penetration and compatibility, sharply lowers surface tension, delivers excellent anti-cratering performance, and provides defoaming action

Other application features

Tech-2409 has excellent substrate wetting properties, suitable for metal paint dense substrates with oil stains, low surface tension and low polarity substrates, porous and difficult to wet substrates, and can be applied to coatings, inks, textiles, leather, adhesives, etc.

Explanation of droplet angle experiment

The working principle of the water droplet angle tester is based on the concepts of wettability and contact angle. When a liquid droplet falls onto a solid surface, it forms a specific angle, known as the contact angle. The size of this angle directly reflects the wetting ability of the liquid on the solid surface. The water droplet angle measuring instrument evaluates the wetting, adhesion, corrosion resistance and other properties of materials by measuring this contact angle. The smaller the angle, the better the wetting effect
