Reactive silicones are a class of specialty silicone materials in which reactive functional groups are introduced into a polysiloxane (Si–O–Si) backbone. Common forms include silane coupling agents (small-molecule cross-linking type), reactive modified silicone oils (medium- to high-molecular-weight additive type), and addition-curing prepolymers containing vinyl or Si–H groups (material-intrinsic type). Unlike conventional inert silicone oils, which rely on incompatibility migration to the surface, reactive silicones are covalently anchored or cross-linked into the system’s network through pathways such as hydrolytic condensation, ring-opening, or radical or platinum-catalyzed addition. This not only provides low surface energy, slip, leveling, a soft hand feel, or interfacial bridging but also significantly reduces the risks of migration, oil bleeding, and recoat adhesion issues. The choice of reactive functional groups (alkoxy/silanol, amino, epoxy, methacryloxy, vinyl/Si–H, etc.) determines compatibility with specific resins, substrates, and curing conditions.
