We are about to develop a new solvent-based pigment concentrate system. How should we begin the evaluation process, and what additives does TAIGA recommend?

We recommend preparing a single pigment paste and first checking the viscosity of the pigment paste. Using appropriate wetting and dispersing agents will significantly reduce the viscosity. Low viscosity in the pigment paste indicates good wetting and dispersion of the pigment. Next, we recommend using the pigment paste to prepare white mixtures, such as white with carbon black, with iron oxide red, and with phthalocyanine blue. Test the applicability, grindability, and stability of these white mixtures under high-speed agitation. The mixture should be stored in an electric forced-air oven at 50°C for at least 3 days, after which the previous application tests should be repeated. A good mixture exhibits high gloss, good leveling, and a low delta E value (< 0.5) both before and after the storage test, with no significant changes in color or gloss during storage. We recommend testing Tech-5366 with titanium dioxide and inorganic pigments, while Tech-6202 and Tech-6320 can be used to disperse carbon black. For colored pigments, we recommend Tech-5350, Tech-5835, and Tech-6320; for defoamers, we suggest Tech-426F. Please contact us for initial reference formulations and recommended usage levels. Usage levels (depending on the type of pigment) can vary significantly.
