We often encounter issues with settling or sagging in water-based matte or tinted wood finishes. How can we improve the formulation?

The anti-settling or anti-sagging properties of water-based matte or tinted wood coatings can be achieved by using associative low-shear thickeners. These products produce pseudoplastic flow characteristics, which help keep matting agents or pigments suspended in the liquid medium. For water-based wood coatings, we highly recommend Tech-9042, with a usage rate of 0.5–2.0% of the total formulation (for anti-settling) and 2.0–5.0% (for anti-sagging).

Association-type high-shear thickeners can impart Newtonian flow behavior to water-based coatings. These products improve application viscosity and enhance leveling. To adjust the high-shear properties of water-based wood coatings, we highly recommend Tech-9040N, with a usage rate of 0.5–2.0% of the total formulation based on the supplied specification.

Tech-5103 significantly improves the dispersion of untreated or treated silica-based matting agents in solvent-based two-component polyurethane, nitrocellulose, alkyd, acid-curing, and radiation-curing systems. The recommended additive dosage is 5.0–10.0% (solid-to-solid) of the matting agent.

We recommend Tech-49203 for this specific application. This defoamer provides excellent defoaming performance for solvent-free, radiation-curable coatings applied via a roller coater at a concentration of 0.2–0.5% (based on the total formulation).

What surfactants or combinations of surfactants would you recommend to improve the wetting and penetration properties of water-based varnishes and paper coatings?

Tech-2846, Tech-2033, and Tech-2733 are silicone-based surfactants that improve the wetting properties of water-based inks and varnishes on various substrates. For silicone-free formulations, we recommend Tech-181W and Tech-182W.
How can the wetting and leveling of acrylic UV inks on aluminum oxide substrates be improved?

UV inks can achieve good substrate wetting with both silicone-based and non-silicone additives: Silicone additives: Tech-2033, Tech-2733; non-silicone additives: Tech-181W, Tech-182W.
